Toronto hydro chief: Electric car upswing would crash grid

One of the biggest concerns about widespread deployment of plug-in vehicles is the effect it will have on electricity generation and distribution capacity. Here in the United States, most officials from utilities have been pretty upbeat and emphasize that there is plenty of capacity for charging vehicles as long as it is mostly done during off-peak hours.
The chief executive of Toronto Hydro, Anthony Haines, however, said recently that the grid can easily fail. Specifically, he told the Toronto Star, "If you connect about 10 percent of the homes on any given street with an electric car, the electricity system fails."

UPS kicks off 90-day demo program using EVI’s electric walk-in delivery van

United Parcel Service (UPS), along with Electric Vehicles International (EVI), have begun conducting a 90-day trial program which will test the capabilities of EVI's battery-powered walk-in delivery van, the EVI-WI. During the past year, UPS and EVI collaborated on the development of an electric vehicle (EV) that will meet the demands of the parcel delivery industry and came up with the EVI-WI. Built on a Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation glider and equipped with a Utilimaster body, the EVI-WI bears a striking exterior resemblance to UPS's standard brown delivery vans, minus the Pullman-inspired hue.
